Fellowship

CHSS fellows are heart surgeons-in-training. They dedicate a year or more of their time to do research on heart surgery and solve critical issues around the treatments.

Dr. David Ashburn,
2001-2003

Dr. Ashburn came to the Data Centre in July, 2001 as the 1st Congenital Heart surgeons Society (CHSS) Data Centre Clinical Research Fellow. David was born in Bristol Tennessee. During his childhood he became an Eagle Scout.  He earned an undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Biology at Furman University, South Carolina.  Prior to entering medical school he spent a year as a graduate research assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.

Dr. Tara Karamlou,
2004-2006

Dr. Tara Karamlou is the 2nd John W. Kirklin Fellow in the CHSS Data Centre, July 2004 to June 2006. Her undergraduate degree is in Biology (magnum cum laude) at the University of Washington, Seattle. Tara graduated in medicine in 1999 with High Honors at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. She entered General Surgery residency in Portland at the Oregon Health & Science University in 1999.

Dr. Edward Hickey,
2006-2008

Dr. Edward Hickey, the 3rd John W. Kirklin Fellow began his tenure in the CHSS Data Centre July 2006. He was born in Montreal but grew up in England, attending St Paul’s School, London. He entered Southampton University Medical School in 1993 and completed both an Honours Degree (BSc. 1st class) in Molecular Cell Biology/Molecular Immunology in 1998 and Bachelor of Medicine (BM) in 1999.

Dr. Mohammad J. Albanna,
2007-2008

MJ is a citizen of Kuwait. He completed his Medical training in 1999 at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom and then joined the Cardiac Surgery Residency Program at the University of Toronto in 2002. He has completed his 5-years of clinical residency and intends to pursue further training in congenital heart surgery.
 

Dr. Anusha Jegatheeswaran ,
2008-2011

Dr. Anusha Jegatheeswaran was the 5th John W. Kirklin/David A. Ashburn Fellow in the CHSS Data Center, and began her tenure with us in July 2008. Anusha completed her Honours B.Sc. at the University of Toronto, with a specialist degree in Human Biology. She then earned her medical degree from McMaster University (Hamilton, Ontario) in 2005.
